Wood is from the James Madison Montpelier rambling estate grounds. The contract tree people were finally able to recover 3 very large red maple trees that were on a small island area surrounded by a shallow pool of water from natural runoff. Three summers ago when we had drought conditions, the trees were harvested before too much water caused their demise.
The wood was saved and a sawmill made slabs that yielded many 1000 of board feet of wood. Turns out some wood was used to make this platter with burl plus Ambrosia Beetle infestations. The beetles bore the holes and cause the dark browns/black in the wood. Some history you can take home.
